Use the printer control panel
This section contains the following topics:
Overview of buttons and lights
For more information about control panel light patterns and messages, see Control panel lights reference.
- Printhead align control panel icon. Shows that the printhead requires alignment.
- Ink cartridge access door open icon. Shows that the printer’s ink cartridge access door or top cover is open.
- Out of paper icon. Shows that the printer is out of paper.
- Paper jam icon. Shows that the printer has a paper jam.
- Resume button and light. The Resume light blinks when the button must be pressed to resume printing. Press to continue a print job after clearing a paper jam, adding paper, or installing a cartridge. Press to cancel a print job when a media size mismatch occurs. Press and hold for three seconds to print a demo page.
- Cancel button. Press once to stop a print job, or press and hold for three seconds to print a printer status report.
- Power button and light. Press to turn the printer on or off. The light indicates whether the printer is on or off.

Label | Name and Description |
- HP ePrint button and light. Press to turn on the HP ePrint function and print an information page. The light indicates whether the printer is connected to an HP ePrint server.
- Wireless button and light. Press to turn the wireless network feature on or off. The button is lit when the wireless network is on.
- Ethernet network icon. Shows that an Ethernet network connection exists.
- Wireless network icon. Shows that a wireless network connection exists.
- Ink cartridge information icons. Displays ink cartridge information, including fill levels. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low on ink message, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace cartridges until prompted to do so.
Change printer settings
If the printer is connected to a computer, you can change the printer settings using HP software tools available on your computer — such as the HP printer software, HP Utility (Mac OS X), or the EWS. For more information about these tools, see Printer management tools.
Print reports
Use the control panel to print the following reports for the printer.
- Printer status report. Press and hold the (Cancel) button for three seconds.
- Network configuration page and Wireless network test page. Press and hold the (Resume) button, and then press the (Wireless) button.
- Demo page. Press and hold the (Resume) button for three seconds.
Finding the printer model number
In addition to the model name that appears on the front of the printer, the printer has
a specific model number. You can use this number when obtaining support and to help determine which supplies or accessories are available for your printer.
The model number is printed on a label located near the ink-cartridge access door.
Select print media
The printer is designed to work well with most types of office media. It is best to test a variety of print media types before buying large quantities. Use HP media for

optimum print quality. Visit the HP website at www.hp.com for more information about HP media.
HP recommends plain papers with the ColorLok logo for printing and copying of everyday documents. All papers with the ColorLok logo are independently tested to meet high standards of reliability and print quality, and produce documents with crisp, vivid color, bolder blacks and dry faster than ordinary plain papers. Look for papers with the ColorLok logo in a variety of weights and sizes from major paper manufacturers.

If you want the best print quality, HP recommends using HP papers that are specifically designed for the type of project you are printing.

Tips for selecting and using media
For the best results, observe the following guidelines.
- Always use media that conforms to the printer specifications. For more information, see Media specifications.
- Load only one type of media at a time into a tray.
- When loading the trays, make sure the media is loaded correctly. For more information, see Load media.
- Do not overload the tray. For more information, see Load media
- To prevent jams, poor print quality, and other printing problems, avoid loading the following media in the trays.
- Multipart forms
- Media that is damaged, curled, or wrinkled
- Media with cutouts or perforations
- Media that is heavily textured, embossed, or does not accept ink well
- Media that is too lightweight or stretches easily
- Media that contains staples or clips

Use these instructions to load standard media.
- Pull out Tray 1.
- Insert the media print-side down in the center of the tray. Make sure the stack of media aligns with the line on the width guide, and is not higher than the paper stack line on the guide.

- Slide the media guides in the tray to adjust them for the media size that you have loaded, and then reinsert the tray.

To load envelopes
Use these instructions to load an envelope.
- Pull out Tray 1.
- Insert the envelopes print-side down and load according to the graphic. Make sure the stack of envelopes does not exceed the line marking in the tray.

- Slide the media guides in the tray to adjust them for the media size that you have loaded, and then reinsert the tray.

Install the accessories

Install the automatic two-sided printing accessory (duplexer)
You can print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically. For information on using the duplexer, see Print on both sides (duplexing).
To install the duplexer
- Slide the duplexer into the back of the printer until the unit locks into place. Do not press the buttons on either side of the duplexer when installing the unit; use them only for removing the unit from the printer.
Install Tray 2
NOTE: Tray 2 is available as an optional accessory.
Tray 2 can hold up to 250 sheets of plain paper. For ordering information, see HP supplies and accessories.
To install Tray 2
- Unpack the tray, remove the packing tapes and materials, and move the tray to the prepared location. The surface must be sturdy and level.
- Turn off the printer, and disconnect the power cord.

- Set the printer on top of the tray.
CAUTION: Be careful to keep your fingers and hands clear of the bottom of the printer.
- Connect the power cord and turn on the printer.
- Enable Tray 2 in the printer driver. For more information, see Turn on accessories in the printer driver.
To load Tray 2
- Pull the tray out of the printer by grasping under the front of the tray.
- Insert the paper print-side down in the center of the tray. Make sure the stack of paper aligns with the line on the width guide, and does not exceed the line marking on the guide.
NOTE: Tray 2 can be loaded only with plain paper.
- Slide the media guides in the tray to adjust them for the size that you have loaded.
