HP’s new color laser range (with no “jet” at the end) represents highly affordable and space-saving laser printers.
The low price and compact dimensions are only available in combination with significant limitations in the most important disciplines: while the print quality is still solid, the speed is lousy for a laser printer.
Especially printing in color just takes too long. The HP Color Laser MFP 178nw would actually be an ideal multifunction color laser device for the home office due to its compact device size.
It can also stand next to you, because the model is so quiet at rest that you can’t even hear it if you’re very sensitive to noise. The series of color laser combinations is intended for the desk.
The paper tray at the front can hold up to 150 sheets, an average number. With A4 paper, the slot protrudes several centimeters from the housing, but is protected from dust by a plastic cover.
With this color laser MFP, the four printing colors are arranged one above the other. The copy speed of the color laser MFP 178nw is limited. Here it does not reach the nominal 18, but only 14 pages per minute.
HP has not changed anything about that but adopted the multi-pass printer. However, the built-in toner cartridges are now HP labeled and have new chips.
In offices where space is limited, the compact housing and WLAN support are a blessing. The multifunctional color laser device can print, scan and copy, but only has a PC fax and no automatic document feeder.
At the same time, NFC and USB host ports have been omitted. You will find USB 2.0, Ethernet LAN, n-WLAN and Wi-Fi Direct as interfaces.
For mobile printing, the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw comes with Apple Airprint and Google Cloud Print standards, has integrated Mopria and HP Print Service for Android devices, and can be controlled through the HP Smart app.
The installation in the WLAN runs smoothly during initial commissioning or later by changing the interface. HP has kept an extra CD for drivers and additional software.
