The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M31w is advertised by HP as a very compact multifunction laser printer. At first glance, the printer does not look like a multifunction laser printer at all.

This printer is a new multifunction laser from HP designed for the home office or very small workspace with minimal print volumes. Functionally it is anything but remarkable.

It spits out black and white A4 prints and has an A4 flatbed scanner mounted on it. This includes color printing. After all, the HP is very handy and quickly finds its place.

Unfortunately, some compactness is lost when the paper is fed. For this you have to fold down the intake, which takes up extra space. On the outside it is otherwise quite inconspicuous.

The exterior is simple grey-white plastic with slightly rounded corners and edges. The overall build quality is stable. It is easy to open and maintain and has a small control panel on the top with an LCD screen that is really only used to set the black, number or size of the copies.

Due to the limited paper stock, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M31w printer is less suitable for large offices, but all the more suitable for households in which a document has to be printed wirelessly every now and then.

In addition, functions such as double-sided printing and double-sided scanning are missing. The scanning itself is only possible from the PC and then ideally with the HP Smart app.

This means that even color photos are displayed in good quality; only dark areas tend to be uniform black rather than fine gradations. After all, you copy directly on the device, where you can also set the number of copies.

But you can’t do much more with the very small LC display. The cut sheet feeder only accepts media up to 120 gsm, so photo paper should not be used. Admittedly, that makes less sense with a black and white printer.

Only one level of quality is offered for printing, which is totally okay as texts are displayed very neatly here. After all, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M31w has a USB-A and WiFi connection, including WiFi direct, if you want to print from your mobile phone.

The printer variant also comes with an integrated WLAN module that supports b/g/n standards. In addition to connecting to the local network via Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi direct is supported, so you can print directly from a tablet or mobile using Android’s native print routines or an HP app for Android and iOS.

There is no fixed network port, so if you don’t want to work wirelessly, USB is applicable. Connected to a network with the Internet, via WiFi or distributed from a computer with a USB, it also supports Apple Airprint and Google Cloud Print.

Installing the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M31w can be as simple as plugging in the USB cable. it was immediately identified and the basic drivers were downloaded in seconds.

For more features, you can download the HP installer, which identifies the printer and offers three different software packages to install; basic drivers, the printer driver we already have, and one for the scanner, HP Smart, the drivers plus an app to track printer status and get help with certain types of printing.
