While the exterior of the new launches and basic functionality, HP touts their particular suitability for photo printing. The smallest droplet size in the printing unit with disposable cartridges is specified with three picolitres. New is the simultaneous use of the three dye colors from the combination cartridge and the pigment black for printing photos.

Externally, the document feeder (ADF) immediately catches the eye. Together with the integrated fax, this is the main difference with the predecessor. There is also a USB host connection directly on the device, from which photos can be read but also templates scanned by the scanner can be saved. The 1,200 dpi scanner is identical across the board and combined with a 35-sheet ADF in the top model.
However, the latter can only read originals on one side and only edit the back side by rotating the template by hand. The HP ENVY Photo 7858 driver and “Dynamic Security” firmware feature already caused a stir last year.
This prevented printing when using third party cartridges and the printer requested that the cartridges be replaced. This practice, also known from other manufacturers, was again crowned by the fact that this lock was timed to activate many months after a firmware update.
