The user receives a device that prints, scans and copies. It is limited to USB as a cable connection, but at the same time also comes with WiFi – that is commendable. It also prints with HP ePrint and Apple AirPrint over the wireless connection.

At the same time, HP also offers the All-in-one Printer Remote app, a small application that can be used to send scans to smartphones and tablet PCs.

In addition to the WLAN capability, the HP Deskjet 2540 multifunction device is intended for home use, therefore a paper tray should be sufficient for up to 60 sheets.

The tray is even slimmer with 25 sheets. After all, the device gives instructions in the driver for manual double-sided printing.

The control panel on the combination printer is limited to symbols and a display of the number of copies. You can determine whether you want to copy in color or in black and white with two separate buttons.

The printer uses cartridges that form a unit with the print head. When you replace the cartridge, you always get a new printhead. Especially the text side is relatively expensive.

For this, the HP Deskjet 2540 multifunction device requires very little power and is completely disconnected from the power supply when it is switched off – that is not a matter of course.

The HP combination printer works with four colors. There is nothing to argue against that. Against blackout in texts and copies, yes. It’s too strong, especially in normal mode.

Texts are easy to read, but applying ink is expensive. See if draft mode is enough for you. Even in color, the device does not save ink if we let it run in normal mode.

The scans have a decent sharpness but are usually quite blue and red tinted. However, at the same time their brightness is good. All in all, the HP Deskjet 2540 is a typical representative of the entry-level class. The integrated WLAN proves to be a highlight.

Otherwise, the multifunction device behaves as expected: in the compact housing there are two cartridges with an integrated print head, which cause high page prices.

It also takes a lot of time to print, scan and copy. It can’t print borderless and we noticed full ink coverage in the normal disciplines. This can get expensive if you print and copy over and over again.
