HP is expanding its Sprocket printer series and Sprocket Select, developed for smartphones. With the updated Sprocket app, improved quality, larger photos and new image-editing tools, the mini printer makes it easier to print photos on the go. The printer can store 10 sheets of 58 x 87 mm paper.
This also matches what the Sprocket Plus offers and is approximately 30 percent larger than the smaller standard model Sprocket New Edition (printing at 51 x 76 mm). A photo must be printed within 68 seconds. The color transitions are soft and the details nuanced.
The Sprocket app compresses and crops the image for printing. But of course there’s more to it than scaling up the source material. Colors are distorted, gradients are coarse and details are noisy.
The reason for this is the ZINK paper. The HP Sprocket Select is a small mobile photo printer aimed at social media enthusiasts and active selfie snappers.
With the handy Sprocket app for your smartphone, you can embellish your photos with stickers or a fun scribble before printing.
Once you’ve hashed a photo on Instagram or Twitter, the Sprocket Select recognizes this activity and automatically wakes up to print this photo – if you’ve shared the photo through the Sprocket app.
The printer comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that you need to charge via slow USB 1.2. The manufacturer states that the device takes more than a minute to print one photo.
It’s pretty slow. In addition, the photo paper is quite expensive. The HP Sprocket Select has a connect button, a status LED, and a micro USB port. You can only use the latter to charge the built-in 700mAh battery.
It is based on Li-Ion technology and charges faster than the 900mAh Li-Polymer battery of the Sprocket Plus model. Due to technology, however, the lifespan is somewhat shorter.
