Small at 12.5cm by 8.5cm, the portable printer takes up less space than a CD. The weight of 180 grams is approximately equal to what a smartphone weighs. HP opted for a friendly design in light tones. The housing, which is 50 percent recycled from old plastic, consists of two parts.

If you remove the cover, you can slide the paper into the slot provided. The HP Sprocket Photo prints the photos on the 5.8 x 8.7 cm ZINK photo sheets. ZINK stands for “Zero Ink”, a printing process without ink.

The color pigments are already in the paper, the printer activates them through different temperatures and exposure times. The process is similar to that of the thermal receipt printer at the supermarket checkout.

While this puts only dark text and graphics on the paper, zinc prints are multicolored. Installing HP Sprocket Photo is very simple. Download the HP Sprocket app for Android or iOS. Then launch the application which will guide you through the rest of the installation process.

Setting up the Bluetooth connection between smartphone and printer is simple, but error-prone. The phone and HP Sprocket Photo did not communicate properly until a firmware update was installed. To save power, the HP device suspends the connection when the append.

The printer does not support Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or NFC. When you’re on the go in the app, it first builds the gallery preview on your phone. Alternatively, you have the option to sync Instagram, Facebook and Google Photos to select already uploaded snapshots to print.

In terms of print settings, the app initially offers you a single print and two tile sizes for larger prints. You can edit photos with a limited number of settings and pre-designed design overlays. A nice feature is the AR code.

In the Sprocket app, you extract a still image from a previously recorded clip and the app adds an AR code to it. If you scan it with your smartphone, you can watch the video, if it is available.

In general, HP ships the Sprocket Photo with a short USB charging cable, two instructions, and a total of 20 sheets of photo paper. You can find detailed quick instructions digitally on the HP product page or on our site.
