The HP Sprocket Plus takes photos out of digital immersion and captures them into business card-sized self-adhesive photos, regardless of time and place. The printer measures 9 × 14 × 1.8 cm and weighs 218 grams with ten sheets in it. This makes it very portable.
The exterior is made entirely of plastic. It comes in black or white upon request. We have both colors available and recommend the white model, as the black version with piano lacquer look is very sensitive to fingerprints and always looks dingy.
At the front, just above the edge, there is a slot for the output of the finished photos. A small status LED is installed directly above it. The charging socket for the supplied micro USB cable is located on the right side of the housing. A suitable power supply unit is not included.
Loading new photo paper is straightforward. Each fresh package contains ten unexposed papers, which the user places loosely in the open HP Sprocket Plus with the white surface facing up. The bottom sheet, the so-called Smartsheet, is needed to calibrate the printer.
Thanks to the zinc printing technology, this printer does not need ink. All colors are already in the photo paper and are extracted over different temperatures and exposure times. The patent for this is held by Zink Imaging, a subsidiary of Polaroid.
The HP Sprocket Plus connects to an Android or iOS device via Bluetooth through the Sprocket app. The app can access images from the mobile phone’s internal memory.
In addition, users can link their Instagram, Facebook and Google Photo accounts to print images stored there. This works fine in the test. The app also offers the option to take photos directly.
