It’s a good surprise that this printer signed HP. In addition to a modest build and basic functionality, this 3-in-1 printer does most of the basic functions and does it quite well.
A white plastic block measuring 43.8 x 31 x 15.8 cm, the HP Deskjet 3631 may be an entry-level product, but overall it’s a pretty well-finished printer.
It actually enjoys a nice design, which, however, does not forget a summary ergonomics. There is only one rear paper feed tray, which only accepts a limited amount of 60 plain sheets.
Similarly, the tray for printed sheets consists of a simple fold-out plastic arm. Finally, no hatch is provided for easy operation of the paper drive mechanisms in the event of a malfunction.
The printer provides the essentials. The printer’s data sheet shows a typical throughput of 8.5 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and 6 ppm in color.
According to our test protocol, the printer is faster than that, at 12.8 and 9 ppm respectively. When scanning, the HP Deskjet 3631 is quite fast.
It takes 11 seconds to scan a 10 x 15 cm photo at 300 dpi and 7 seconds to scan an A4 document at 100 dpi.
This speed benefits the copy function knowing that the printer takes 14 seconds to copy a black and white page and 25 seconds to copy a color page.
Deteriorating a little as always, the quality of the copies remains very correct. Though, and this isn’t trivial for a cheap product, it comes with a USB Type-B cable in addition to the power cord: this in itself is rather surprising as it’s the kind of small savings that manufacturers don’t generally ignore.
In addition, this 3-in-1 ultimately offers everything you would expect from a modern printer, between WiFi connectivity and a mobile application for remote printing.
Overall a good entry-level MFP, the HP Deskjet 3631 does most of the work. Despite a small control panel pleasant in everyday use, it makes for an honest display in the office and quite convincing in photos.
Admittedly, the cost per page is one of its main weaknesses, but those interested in the Instant Ink program will be able to greatly reduce the cost of this model over time.
