At first glance, the HP ENVY 5549 scores with its chic appearance and small external dimensions, but we are of course much more interested in what it has to offer under the hood.

The 2.2 inch touchscreen looks contemporary and is wonderful to use. The menus contain a surprising amount of useful additional features, such as the ability to print graph paper or crossword puzzles from web pages.

The 125-sheet capacity main input tray has increased capacity over previous models. The photo output bin can hold up to 15 sheets of 10 x 15 cm paper.

Make sure no other size photo paper can be used. The output tray holds up to 25 sheets. It is advisable to use the correct paper for the accompanying prints because we are dealing with ink here and that does not go well with every paper.

If you want a professional photo print, which works excellently with this device, then you shouldn’t economize on paper and then blame the printer. Until now, we have neglected the other functions, namely scanning and copying.

As expected, it works flawlessly, but it cannot fax, which sets it apart from other multifunction devices. When it comes to speed, HP, like almost all manufacturers, digs a little too deep into its bag of tricks, but the speeds we achieved were within an acceptable range and we can turn a blind eye with a clear conscience.

This HP ENVY 5549 multifunction device is recommended for users who need to print relatively small volumes and have longer idle times in between.

The “printhead-cartridge” unit could be almost typical HP. This has sparked endless debate in the past and is sure to continue to attract enthusiastic supporters and fierce opponents in the future.

Clearly something is being thrown away here that could potentially work well for a long time to come, namely the printhead. On the other hand, a defective print head is also replaced by a simple “cartridge replacement”.

The 2-cartridge technology is also very controversial because the color cartridge has to be replaced when only one color is empty. However, the black ink is excluded from this, as it is the second in the group.

This technology has enormous advantages if you are afraid of dehydration and you can of course do so by using suitable third-party products.

When it comes to the supported operating systems, the manufacturer immediately stands out for its wide range of Windows and Mac OS versions.

100% Linux support is probably so natural that it doesn’t even need to be mentioned, because HP is one of the Linux dinosaurs.

From the beginning, HP ENVY 5549 was the printer standard for Linux! USB2.0 and WLAN are available for communication with the “clients”.

Wired LAN certainly wouldn’t be bad, but you probably won’t really miss it either. Thanks to the WLAN connection, printing from the Internet is of course also possible.

As soon as the connection is established, which can be done quickly thanks to the hassle-free installation, the printing fun can begin.
